Movie Reviews by Louis B Hobson
LITE 96's special guest, Louis B weighs in on Calgary's new movies.
The Kids Are All Right
Starring: Angelina Julianne Moore, Annette Bening, Mark Ruffalo
Rating: 4 STARS
When I first caught the trailers for The Kids Are All Right, I thought it was going to be an uproarious comedy. The ingredients for farce are certainly there.
Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore
Starring: James Marsden, Nick Nolte, Christina Applegate, Katt Williams
Rating: 3 STARS
Okay, I'll admit it. I have a cat, a parrot and a dog so how can I not like Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore. This is one of those films in which, thanks to some clever computer work, talk.
Salt
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alex Pettyfer
Rating: 4 STARS
Angelina Jolie's summer action thriller Salt is just a James Bond or Jason Bourne with a female protagonist. That's not a negative thing by a long way because Jolie pulls it off in a seemingly effortless manner.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Alfred Molina, Teresa Palmer
Rating: 2 STARS
If you say that someone or something is amiable, it means they are appealing but not particularly impressive. This is about as much as you can say for Nicolas Cage's new adventure romp The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
Inception
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Rating: 3 STARS
Don't be afraid to admit you found Christopher Nolan's Inception confusing. It's meant to be. That's the whole purpose of this mind-bending special effects extravaganza.
The Girl Who Played With Fire
Starring: Noomi Rapace, Michael Nyqvist, Lena Endre, Georgi Staykov
Rating: 4 STARS
I like to say that theatre should only charge half price for The Girl Who Played With Fire because the film is so suspenseful and so tense that you'll only use the front half of your seat.
Predators
Starring: Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins
Rating: 2.5 STARS
Predators, the new sci-fi horror flick is a neat little marriage of that wonderful old short story The Most Dangerous Game and Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None which was known for decades as Ten Little Indians.
Despicable Me
Starring: Jason Segel, Steve Carell, Russell Brand, Will Arnett
Rating: 4 STARS
The animated feature Despicable Me is an absolute delight. I readily admit I prefer it to both Toy Story 3 and Shrek 4.
The Last Airbender
Starring: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Dev Patel, Jackson Rathbone
Rating: 1 STAR
M. NIght Shyamalan's The Last Airbender is a monumental disaster. It is monumentally inept, monumentally boring and monumentally silly.
